Most moves are fraught with stress and headaches. It seems like no matter what you do, there’s something you miss, and it makes the moving process more difficult than it needs to be. But despite all of the challenges, you can still make moving fun! When there are so many moving parts in a move, finding ways to make them work in harmony makes your move easier and less stressful.
Movone Move & Store, Hoboken’s preferred moving services provider has assembled this quick list of ways that make any move fun. And don’t forget to read our moving tips from part one too!
Think Of The Children
When it’s time to move, children can either be helpers or hindrances. It really depends on how you frame your move. But there are some easy ways to get kids to help you pack and move without them even knowing!
Make Up A Moving Song
Change the lyrics to their favorite song or a popular hit on the radio. Throw in some lines about your move, where you’re going, and how to pack. Get the whole family singing as you work, and your kids will happily pack without realizing that they’re doing work!
Make It A Scavenger Hunt
Kids rooms are always messy, so it’s surprisingly easy to hide fun surprises and treats right under their noses. Before you start packing, tell them that you’ve hidden fun things like candies or little toys in their room that they’ll only find if they pack up their room. For older kids, you can hide fun notes and riddles that will send them in search of items to pack away for you.
Decorate The Boxes
Tell your kids that after each box they pack up, they can decorate the outside of the box with crayons and markers. Make sure that they put their name and which room the box goes in before they start their next masterpiece. You’ll stay organized and your kids will stay focused!
Keep Some Cardboard Handy
As clever as these tips are, eventually your children will get bored with the packing process. It’s nothing against your children and everything against packing. Once their toys are packed up, they’ll likely turn to you for entertainment. If you’re still busy with packing or cleaning, you’ll want to keep them occupied so you can continue to work uninterrupted. Keeping some cardboard boxes handy and free of stuff can be a great way to entertain your children. Have them build a castle in an empty room, and let them decorate it with packing tape and wrapping paper. The construction process will keep them busy for hours, and you can pack it all away in minutes. It’s a win-win for everyone!
After the movers have left, and all of your boxes are stacked up, don’t start unpacking right away. If you have younger children, they might feel out-of-place in your new home. Making move-in fun by spending the first few nights camped out in the living room! You can set up a tent, or make a blanket fort and have a family sleepover in your new space. Your children will appreciate this fun introduction and you’ll feel like a kid again!
Let Your Kids Unpack Their Own Room
While it’s tempting to just unpack everything for them, letting your children unpack their own rooms saves you time and energy, and makes them more comfortable in their new space. They can find places to put their toys and clothes that make sense for them. By giving them the authority over their own room, it may even inspire them to keep it clean and organized all on their own. Plus, with the kids occupied with their own spaces, you can focus on communal spaces like kitchens, living rooms, and bathrooms that need to be arranged in a certain way.
